A young man was crushed to death along the Diamond/Mocha bypass, East Bank Demerara (EBD), on Saturday moments after he reportedly told his relatives, “I want dead”. The dead man has been identified as 23-year-old Ishwar Mohan of Second Street, Success, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Police stated that on the day in question at about 19:00h, a motor car, PZZ 7322, driven by a 22-year-old was proceeding along the roadway at a fast rate of speed when he reportedly ran over the pedestrian who was lying on the road. The pedestrian was dragged some distance.
The car reportedly failed to stop to render assistance but instead, the driver went to the Providence Police Station where he reported the matter. He claimed that he did not stop due to “security reasons”.
However, the Police immediately went to the area where the injured man was seen lying on the roadway in a motionless state. He was pronounced dead at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
His body was escorted to the Memorial Gardens Crematorium awaiting a post-mortem. A breathalyser test was conducted on the driver of the motor car but there were no traces of alcohol in his system.
He remains in custody assisting with investigations.
At the scene on Saturday evening, persons related that Mohan and his relatives are building a bouse in Farm New Housing Scheme, EBD, and on the day in question, they had been working at the site for the whole day.
Guyana Times understands that after a day’s work, the family and the workers started to imbibe during which Mohan became angry after he was given “High Wine” to drink while the others were consuming another brand of rum.
In protest, the now dead man walked onto the main access road where he reportedly threw himself down and shouted “I want dead”. His relatives reportedly warned him several times to come off the road but a stubborn Mohan refused to adhere to their request.
