Man drowns after boat mishap at Makari Backdam

…another feared dead

The body of a man was on Sunday afternoon recovered from the Cuyuni River and a search is ongoing to locate the body of another after the boat in which the two were travelling sunk in Makari Backdam, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) on Saturday.

The body of “Dougla” (only name given) was discovered at around 17:00h on Sunday following a search.
Guyana Times understands that “Dougla” and the other missing man, identified only as “Fineman”, were employed to assist with the transporting of a dredge belonging to a man named “Tony” from the said backdam.
However, 37-year-old Suban Hussain of Bidrabu, Bartica, reported that he and the missing men along with two others left the backdam in a small boat headed to the landing in Bartica.
The 15 horsepowered boat encountered technical difficulties and sunk. Hussain and two others were able to swim to shore; however, “Dougla” and “Fineman” could not be found.
After the matter was reported, a massive search was launched. The search is still ongoing to located “Fineman”.
