A man who allegedly escaped from the Whim Police Station lockups on Monday after being arraigned with a break and enter and larceny charge is holding out that he was never in the lockups.
Escapee: Dinesh Sookram
The police stated that Dinesh Sookram of Friendship Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was placed in the lockups after he could not provide the $200,000 bail that was set by the Magistrate when he appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The police stated that it was while in the lockups that he escaped by removing a board from the walls but the man claimed that after he was taken out of the lockups on Monday to attend court, he was never placed back in the cell.
While the police were busy looking for the man, Guyana Times caught up with him at a relative’s home. He recalled that while he was being transported by police ranks, he ran away.
“I just pull away from the police and run out the station…I was scared… I don’t want to go to jail,” he stated.

According to the man, who was not registered at birth and has no birth certificate, he was accused of stealing three silver chains, three silver finger rings along with two diamond rings after breaking into a Corentyne home.
“The police just look fo me and catch me and carry me,” the man cried. Sookram was living with his father and six siblings after their mother had moved out. In December 2017, his father was murdered after which his siblings had to fend for themselves. He, however, lives with his grandmother, Sattie.
The 68-year-old woman said that Sookram has been giving her problems in recent times.
“He nah stop do ting. Why he ah go out an trouble people ting and get me talking at this age. Is Government mining me now. All wah you ah talk to he, he nah stop,” the elderly woman stated.
Sookram admitted that he escaped from the police station because he does not want to go to jail or be shot by the police.
He, nevertheless, intends to return to the police station but not before his next court date which is March 25.
When contacted, Divisional Commander Paul Langevine told Guyana Times that the police are on the hunt for the prison escapee. He also stated that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
