Principal magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, Judy Latchman, on Monday ordered a remorseful young man accused of committing simple larceny to pay a fine of $80,000 after he readily pleaded guilty to the offence.
It had been alleged that Dwayne Williams on November 19, 2017 at Toucan Drive, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, stole from the person of Virtual Complainant (VC) Stacy Benjamin, one Amazon tablet valued at $80,000.
The Police reported that on the day of the incident, the defendant forced his hand through a window and stole the device which was at the time on the VC’s bed.
The incident was reported and Williams was arrested. He admitted to the offence in a caution statement and was charged shortly after.
In court on Monday, the defendant apologised to the VC and said that he did not know why he did what he did.
Considering all relevant factors in the circumstances, the Magistrate was inclined to impose a fine of $80,000 with a default sentence of three months in prison.
