Home News Man gets bail on possession of firearm, ammo charges
A resident of North East La Penitence, Georgetown was on Friday arraigned in Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus’s Court on charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.
Jamal Washington, 29, denied both of the charges, and was granted bail by the Magistrate.
The Police contended that on April 23, 2021, at Evans Street Charlestown, he had in his possession a .32 taurus pistol and five live rounds of ammunition.
Washington was represented by Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson, who, in his bail application, told the court that on the day in question, his client was at a masjid.
He added that a group of men were also hanging out in the vicinity. However, officers in a patrol vehicle pulled up, and the men scattered.
The attorney said his client made a dash as well, since officers would usually arrest persons in the area. While his client was running, he fell, and Police were able to arrest him.
Thompson added that Washington was beaten by the Police while in custody, and was able to seek medical attention only on Tuesday last, despite being held since Friday.
The attorney further stated that at no time did his client have the alleged items in his possession.
The Police Prosecutor, however, told the court that on the day in question, officers were on patrol in the area when they observed Washington acting in a suspicious manner, and a search was conducted on his person. He said the illegal firearm and ammunition were found in Washington’s pants’ crotch.
Washington has been placed on $100,000 bail for each charge, and has been ordered to report to the Brickdam Police Station every fortnight until the conclusion of his matters.
The cases have been adjourned to June 2.
