Man jailed for smuggling ganja into prison

A man who claimed to be homeless was on Friday afternoon slapped with a four-year jail term and ordered to pay a fine of ,000 by city Magistrate Leron Daly, for smuggling contraband into the Camp Street Prison earlier this week.

May 8, 2017, at the Camp Street Prison, Georgetown, he had in his possession 793 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Prosecutor Bharat Mangru related that on the day in questioned, the 47-year-old man was seen hurling two bulky onion bags over the wall of the Camp Street Prison. These bags, he stated, were retrieved and found to contain leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.

The man was then apprehended and charged with the offence, allegedly confessing to the crime in a caution statement.
