Man jailed in absentia for ganja trafficking captured

A miner who was jailed in absentia for ganja trafficking was on Friday morning nabbed at the Bartica Stelling, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) on his way to the interior after evading the Police for years.

According to Police, the man will now be heading to prison to start his three-year sentence which was handed down for trafficking marijuana in 2018.
OJ Evans, of Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara (WBD) was arrested in 2017 after he was found with several taped parcels of compressed cannabis minutes after he disembarked a ferry at the Bartica Stelling.
Reports are on June 1, 2017, at First Avenue, Bartica, he had in his possession 1218 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. Evans was spotted at the Stelling acting in a suspicious manner and a search was subsequently conducted on his belongings and the marijuana was found in a butter tub wrapped in a salt bag. He was told of the offence, and charged.
The 30-year-old man was released on bail after his first court appearance, but never returned for his trial.
The matter was conducted in his absence and he was found guilty for the offence and jailed in absentia and fined $1.8 million. (G9)
