Man killed in Montrose accident

Minutes after the Guyana Police Force revealed that there has been a 21 per cent decrease in fatalities up to the end of March, a pedestrian was on Wednesday afternoon killed after he was struck down by a speeding vehicle at Montrose, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Dead is 53-year-old Nazim Ali of Lot 9 Sherry Field, La Bonne Intention, ECD. While information remains sketchy, Guyana Times understands that the now dead man was walking along the Montrose Railway Embankment when he was struck down.

Based on reports received, as a result of the impact, Ali sustained severe injuries to his body and died on the spot. He was nevertheless picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the 4×4 vehicle was taken into custody as Police continue their investigations.

Mark Ali, a nephew of the now dead man, when contacted, told Guyana Times that he was at home when he received a call from a friend informing him that his uncle was involved in an accident.

He claimed that based on what he was told, his uncle, who is a fish vendor, was heading home when the vehicle, which was overtaking another vehicle, struck him down. He said that the driver was reportedly drunk.

He further stated that after receiving the news, he immediately rushed to the scene where he saw his uncle’s mangled body on the roadway.

The grieving nephew noted that his uncle was a quiet individual, who did not get into any problems.
