A man whose only name was given as ‘Flim’ was confronted with an allegation of breaking and entering the Zeelugt Shiva Mandir on the East Bank Essequibo at sometime between Sunday midnight and Monday morning. He confessed to stealing several items from the religious place of worship, and is presently in
Police custody.
Guyana Times was told by a devotee of the mandir, Poorandai Sukhu, that the stolen items have been recovered. She explained that when a caretaker of the building visited the temple on Monday at about 06:00h to switch off the lights, she found the idols stripped and the building ransacked. She raised an alarm, and the incident was reported to the Police.
The devotees who suspected the man went to his home with a team of officers and unearthed the missing items in his fowl pen. Taken into custody, he subsequently confessed to the crime at the Leonora Police Station.
According to Sukhu, ‘Flim’ gained entry into the building through a window which was grilled. She said the grill seemed to have been sprawled open.
Sukhu said a public-address system and over $200,000 were stolen in decorations and other items.’
