Man of unsound mind sets house on fire

A mentally ill man was arrested in the wee hours of Saturday after he reportedly set his house on fire at Coglan Dam, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
The fire was reportedly set at about 23:15h on Friday evening by the 45-year-old man. Police stated that on the day in question, residents reported that a fire was seen coming from the building.
An alarm was subsequently raised and the fire service from the La Grange Fire Station and West Ruimveldt Fire Station were summoned to the scene.
The firefighters went into action and managed to contain the blaze to one building which was subsequently destroyed.
Further reports stated that the suspect may have started the fire and fled the scene. However, the suspect was seen at a neighbour’s residence a short distance away from where the fire occurred.
As such, he was arrested and taken to West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was treated for burns about his body. An investigation is underway.
