A manhunt is currently underway for the recapture of Adrian Damder, who escaped from Lusignan Prison on Sunday. The escapee, from Graham Street, Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, was remanded to prison on January 14 on two counts of threatening language. He reportedly threatened to harm his father.
The Guyana Times understands that on Sunday, Damder had finished taking a bath and requested permission from one of the prison officers to hang his towel in the sun. He was allowed into the compound unsupervised.
He nevertheless took the opportunity to scale one of the fences, made his way behind the new female prison that is currently under construction, and scaled another fence, which took him to the dump site where he made his escape.
However, authorities only became aware of the prisoner’s disappearance during a roll call later on Sunday evening. As such, the prison service has launched an investigation into the incident.
This publication further understands that several prison officers were placed under close arrest and are assisting with the probe.
Back in April 2024, 31-year-old Keon Webster and Kareem Douglas escaped while being transported to Lusignan Prison. Webster was later recaptured while walking around the Stabroek Market area.
Douglas was recaptured by a rank from Brickdam Police Station at the Stabroek Market Bazaar on Water Street, Georgetown. It was reported that on February 19, 2024, the duo escaped while being reportedly handcuffed together during the journey to the prison.
As the vehicle arrived, it reportedly reversed to the ‘Reception Gate’ of the prison. One prisoner reportedly walked in, but Webster and Douglas jumped out of the prison van and began running towards the public road.
In addition, in April 2022, 40-year-old Keanon Harry and Kevin Velladares escaped from a Guyana Prison Service (GPS) van while being transported to Lusignan Prison from Linden in Region 10.
Velladares later flagged down a taxi and turned himself in at the Brickdam Police Station, while Harry later turned himself in at the Leonora Police Station on the West Coast of Demerara one day after the incident.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Prison Service is asking anyone with information that may lead to the recapture of Damder to contact them at 613-6616 or 623-7156.
