A man was remanded to prison for the rape of an 8-year-old girl, when he appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court.
Hemant Sewcharran, 49, of Glasgow New Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice, was not required to plead to the charge with stated that on 30 September, 2016 he was found to be in a compromising position with an eight-year-old girl.
The prosecution facts stated that though the incident occurred on 30 September, it was only reported to the police on 3 October.
The accused is expected to return to court on November 3, 2016.
It is alleged that on the day in question, the child and her brother were returning home from school when the suspect invited them into his home, at approximately 12:30h.
According to reports, this was a frequent occurrence, and on many occasions the suspect would offer food and money to the two children. However, on this specific day, the suspect allegedly told the brother to remain outside, while he took her into his home. After waiting for some time, the brother became impatient and decided to go into the house. It was then that he saw the man on top of his sister. The boy immediately ran home and informed his mother of what he had witnessed. Shortly after, the 8-year-old child was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where she was examined. The medical certificate was subsequently handed over to the police. Reports indicate that the little girl resides with her mother, brother and two other siblings.
