Man shot dead in North Road confrontation

A man was killed early Sunday morning following an altercation on North Road, in the vicinity of the Hotel Guyana Club. The deceased, who is sporting dreadlocks and whose identity remains unknown, was pronounced dead at about 10:43h after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head. Based on information received, the incident, which occurred between Alexander and Camp Streets, Georgetown, occurred at about 07:45h when the man was standing in front of the bar at the Hotel Guyana Club, a location he is said to have frequented. Police said at the time, he reportedly observed a man, dressed in a black jersey and dark grey pants, urinating on the northern side of the roadway opposite the club.
The situation escalated when the deceased approached the man and began striking him about the head. The suspect then allegedly reached into a side bag he was carrying, retrieved a small handgun, and pointed it at the deceased. It is reported that he attempted to discharge the weapon twice, but no rounds were released.

The confrontation escalated when the suspect allegedly struck the deceased twice on the head with the firearm, causing him to fall onto the roadway. While the man was on the ground, he was reportedly struck again about the head. A loud explosion was then heard.
After the attack, the suspect placed the firearm back into his side bag and walked away, heading west along North Road, leaving the injured man lying on the street.
A passing police patrol was alerted by a witness shortly after and responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers observed what appeared to be blood on the man’s head and face. The body was examined and found lying on its right side, with the head facing north-east and the feet positioned south-west. He was clad in a pair of long white jeans, a brown Burberry jersey, black Adidas sneakers, and had a dark blue one-strap bag across his body. A gunshot wound was observed on the right side of the head. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) were summoned to the location and he was pronounced dead. The suspect remains at large as investigations continue.
