Man to stand trial for rape of 13-year-old girl

A 30-year-old man was on Wednesday committed to stand trial at the High Court in Demerara for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.

Rape accused: Collin Venture

Collin Venture is accused of engaging in sexual penetration with the underage girl in September 2020 in Georgetown. He was first charged with the offence on January 13, 2021 when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was released on $150,000 bail. Senior Magistrate Leron Daly conducted a paper committal and after assessing the evidence, ruled that a prima facie case was made out against the rape accused to put him on trial at the High Court.
According to facts, Venture is known to the teenage girl and it is alleged that he was in the habit of taking her into a toilet behind a shop where he would rape her. The matter came to light after the girl’s stepmother searched her phone and discovered some very disturbing messages exchanged between her and Venture. The young girl was confronted and she admitted that Venture raped her.
A report was made to the Police, and the man was arrested and charged. Venture remains on bail pending the hearing and determination of his trial which is scheduled for the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes. As a condition of bail, he has to report weekly to the Police. (G1)
