A Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) Regional Democratic Council (RDC) employee who slapped a councillor aligned to the AFC faction of the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance for Change (APNU-AFC) coalition was sentenced to three months community service.
According to information, Rockliffe George was found guilty of the Friday August 26 slapping of Councillor Naithram (only name) over a difference the two had over drainage works in the area.
Guyana Times was told that from now until December, George will serve his sentence at the Anna Regina Police Station.
In late August, the councillor was slapped some four times by George during a conversation with two rangers at the RDC Drainage and Irrigation building concerning the cleaning and maintenance of trenches.
Naithram, the Agriculture Coordinator in Region Two had said that during that conversation, the employee interrupted and slapped him across face.
“What I did was simply speak out; things aren’t going the way I speak out, I am the one overlooking, I have every right to speak out,” Naithram had said.
After the incident, the councillor reported the matter to the Anna Regina station and had also visited Suddie Public Hospital where he was given a medica.
Meanwhile, Region Two RDC Chairman, Devanand Ramdatt had stated that he was “saddened over the disrespectful act” by the employee whom he alleged was “handpicked” by Regional Executive Officer Rupert Hopkinson.
