A 20-year-old woman of Hotoquai Village, North West District (NWD), and a 33-year-old man of Bamia Linden-Soesdyke Highway, are now dead after they reportedly drowned over the weekend.
Police said the body of 20-year-old Danielly Daniels was found sometime between 07:00h and 07:40h at Morwhanna, NWD, on Saturday.
It was reported that at about 10:00h on Friday, January 15, 2021, Danielly left Hotoquai Village to visit her aunt who resides at Morwhanna, NWD.
According to the dead woman’s aunt, she last saw the now dead woman at about 07:00h the previous morning sitting on the wharf with her mobile phone in her hands. However, at about 07:40h, the young lady was nowhere to be seen. As such, an alarm was raised and a search party was formed to look for the missing woman.
It was during the search, one of the persons who was part of the search party went into the water and found Danielly submerged.
Her motionless body was pulled from the water and taken to the Mabaruma Regional Hospital where she was seen and examined by a doctor on duty, who pronounced her dead.
The body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem. An investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, 33-year-old Jiachim Perez Peters of Friendship, East Coast Demerara (ECD), reportedly drowned on Friday after he allegedly fell overboard while travelling along Sand Landing, Canje Creek.
Police preliminary reports stated that an operator of Bamia, Linden-Soesdyke Highway, reported that he along with five others who are employed by A V R Sawmill located at Sheet Anchor, East Canje, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), joined a punt which was attached to a small boat and powered by an outboard engine.
At the time of the incident, the boat was captained by a resident of Fort Ordinance, East Canje, Berbice.
According to the captain of the boat, at about 18:00h, while in the vicinity of Sand Landing (Kari-Kari), Canje Creek, he was navigating a turn but looked ahead to see if the path was clear.
Upon doing so, he observed someone in the water about 20 feet from his boat.
As such, he reportedly called out to the other occupants of the boat and turned off the engine. Shortly after, two of the occupants of the boat went into the rough water to assist the man, but were unable to do so.
As a result, Peters submerged under the raging water. It was then the captain realised that the man was one of the occupants of his boat. The matter was reported and a search party was launched to recover the body.
The boat captain and the occupants were detained as investigations continue.
