Mason dies by suicide while in Police lock-ups

Minutes after he was arrested and placed in the lock-ups at the Providence Police Station, 56-year-old Lloyd David, a mason of Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was found dead, and he is suspected to have died by suicide.
Police stated that the now dead man was arrested following a report made against him by his 32-year-old wife on Sunday at about 14:00h. The woman was escorted to her home, where her husband was arrested based on her allegations, including the alleged attempted rape of a minor.
The man was taken to the Providence Police Station and placed in a cell with two other prisoners.
Whilst in the lock-ups, he reportedly assaulted one of the other persons, who had to be sent to receive medical attention. However, Police stated that due to his violent behaviour, he was placed in a cell by himself.
About 30 minutes later, the person in the other cell alerted the Police that David had committed suicide. The EMT personnel were summoned and pronounced him dead.
The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into the matter.
