Mason jailed in absentia for narco-trafficking to start serving sentence

…after being charged for similar offence

After being sentenced in absentia to four years in prison for narcotics trafficking, 30-year-old Terry Gittens will now begin serving that jail time. He appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Monday charged for a similar offence.
Gittens, of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on February 15 at Fourth Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), he had in his possession 1314 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
According to facts presented to the court, Police ranks acting on information received went to a popular nightclub at Fourth Avenue Bartica, where they made contact with the defendant, who was then informed that an arrest warrant was issued for him.
However, Gittens in response allegedly attempted to bribe ranks with marijuana to let him go free. This prompted Police to search the premises and unearth a black bulky bag containing the illegal drug.
The Chief Magistrate ordered that Gittens begin serving the sentence, while she remanded him to prison on the current charge. The case will continue on March 12, 2020, at the Bartica Magistrate’s Courts.
