The campaign, which commenced on Friday, has seen massive clean-up activities involving regional officials, the private sector, residents, and volunteers in the township of Anna Regina. Other areas to be targeted are Charity and Suddie.
As efforts continue to keep building momentum for the exercise, Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva has called on residents in the various locations to join the campaign activities and assist.
“Since we started this massive clean-up exercise, we have finished the road leading to the Mainstay resort, Supenaam Waterfront, and other areas on the Essequibo Coast. Many persons were dumping their garbage in streets and road shoulders, however, the area was cleaned and a hut will be put up with an officer to overlook,” De Silva said during an interview with Guyana Times.
De Silva said that anyone found littering will face the penalties, adding that the clean-up exercise started with a mini-excavator clearing trenches along the coast.
Additionally, De Silva called for hire car and minibus drivers to ensure that they carry garbage bags in their vehicles for passengers to use to properly dispose of their garbage.
