Massy Women’s CPL 2022 tourney: Rain plays spoilsport after Fraser’s heroics in GAW vs TKR match

Rain, rain, go away!

It was a disappointing end to what was an otherwise exciting match when the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) Women took on the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) Women in a match of the Massy Women’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) on Thursday evening.
Without a doubt, Guyana’s Cherry-Ann Fraser was the star of the show, having routed the TKR top order for 21 runs from 4 overs, and picking up three wickets in the process.

Fraser’s entrance into the bowling attack was somewhat quiet, with her conceding three runs in the 5th over. However, when the 23-year-old pacer returned for her second over, she proceeded to wreak havoc on the Trinbagonian openers.
With the first ball of the 7th over, Fraser served a pitched-up delivery to Lee-Ann Kirby, who responded by slicing it to Karishama Ramharack in the circle. An LBW appeal followed the wicket, and a boundary ensued off the bat of Natasha McLean, but Fraser had the last laugh when she skittled McLean’s stumps with the fourth ball of the over.
And just as Sune Luus got comfortable in her innings, Fraser returned to send her packing, with Ramharack again playing a part in capturing that wicket.
At that juncture, Deandra Dottin was one of TKR’s last hopes at an explosive finish to the innings. However, after Dottin had dispatched Shabika Gajnabi into the stands, Gajnabi got her sweet revenge when Dottin, attempting another big shot, instead dragged the ball onto her stumps to hand Gajnabi her first CPL wicket.
Hayley Jensen, looking as though she was ready to take the Warriors’ bowling to the cleaners in pursuit of a competitive score, smashed 12 of the 13 runs in over 16, but was quickly brought back to earth when Shamilia Connell sent Kyshona Knight back to the dugout in the following over.
Jensen finished the innings quietly, unbeaten on 25 from as many balls. Jensen’s score ended up being the best on the TKR scorecard, with Dottin being the next best batter, hitting 21 from 18 balls. Natasha McLean also contributed 20 from 26 to take the TKR score to 105.
While Fraser was the pick of the bowlers, Connell and Ayabonga Khaka kept things tight. Connell returned figures of 1-10 from her four, while Khaka’s 4 overs went produced figures of 1-3.
During the TKR innings, the rain had already played spoilsport several times, but it had the final say at the beginning of the Warriors’ batting innings.
Rashada Williams had only enough time to hit a solitary boundary in her innings of 7 runs from 8 balls — while at the other end, Chamari Athapaththu was now finding her groove on 2 from 5 balls –- when the floodgates of Heaven were opened in an unrelenting downpour.
As the rain persisted, Guyana’s batters were left stranded on 13-0, and were forced to share points with TKR. As a result of the abandoned game, the TKR Women have booked their tickets to Sunday’s Women’s CPL final, while the Warriors and the Barbados Royals women will battle on Saturday for the other spot in Sunday’s finals.
