Home News ‘Maths Camp’ attracts 1200 students
Over one thousand students turned out to the newly introduced Maths Camp. The camp, which is aimed at improving the performance of children at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) is being held at three locations; West Ruimveldt Primary, FE Pollard Primary and North Georgetown Primary.
The classes will be held on Saturday mornings from 09:00h-12:00h until March 24 when the assessment is conducted.
On Saturday, the Education Ministry said some 1200 students are participating in the programme. The main purpose of the programme, the Ministry noted, is to discuss difficult mathematical topics and concepts and to share effective methods to address same with emphasis on problem-solving techniques.
The initiative is expected to see Maths coordinators and monitors along with teachers from the various schools organising and being actively involved in this exercise.
The camp was introduced after the Ministry realised the majority of students writing the Mathematics examination faced considerable weakness in the subject area.
The intervention entailed a number of aspects such as training for teachers in content and methodology, and over 1000 teachers were trained in this regard.
The camp also presents the opportunity for parents to assist and learn strategies to help teachers; thereby bringing by a more collective impact.
Over the years, students have been struggling in this subject area and this camp is said to serve as another intervention of the Education Ministry to improve performance at the Grade Six levels.
