An inmate at the Mazaruni Prison was busted with contraband items along with a quantity of cannabis.
Reports are the 40-year-old prisoner was found with the items at the facility at 11:00h on Friday.
Reports are prison officers attached to the Mazaruni Prison, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), received information that the prisoner had the items in his possession, and confronted him. Shortly after, the inmate took the officers to an area aback the prison and dug up the items which were concealed in a white plastic bag.
Guyana Times was told that a further search was conducted on the bag, which revealed five parcels wrapped with transparent plastic, which contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems. The cannabis was weighed and amounted to 584g.
Along with the drugs, six cell phones without SIM cards and three packs of cigarettes were found.
This newspaper was told that the prisoner was grilled, and he revealed that he received the package from another prisoner. That prisoner was also questioned but denied any knowledge of the items.
They were both arrested and taken to the Bartica Police Station. Investigations are in progress.
On Saturday, a raid was conducted at the prison at about 13:00h by ranks from the Bartica Police Station where several contraband items were found.
Among the things that were found were two cellular phones, one SIM card, two kilograms cannabis and a quantity of improvised weapons and other prohibited items. (G9)
