In a weekend packed with action, McGill Super Stars Sports Club defeated the Windsor Forest Sports Club in the West Demerara Cricket Association’s (WDCA’s) Beacons 50-Over competition by 123 runs. The match was held at the Windsor Forest Cricket Ground.
At the spin of the toss, Mc Gill emerged victors and opted to bat first on a hard wicket. Sunny conditions also favoured the team batting first.
Windsor Forest were no strangers to McGill, their having defeated them in the past, and McGill were prepared to make light work of the fragile team. Opening the batting for the superstars McGill were brothers Travis and Troy Persaud, who played smartly as they built a mammoth opening stand of 118 runs. But Troy Persaud fell in the 25th over, and Windsor Forest were given a window of opportunity.
Batsmen continued to fall as Travis Persaud was offered no support. He, however, continued to rally, bringing up his century in 115 balls. Eventually he was dismissed in the 32nd over, with the score at 168-5; and from there it was light work for Windsor Forest, who restricted McGill to 208 all out in 41.3 overs.
Top scoring for Mc Gill, Travis Persaud made an even 100 (6×4, 4×6); Troy Persaud made 32, and Daniel Basdeo made 20. For Windsor Forest, Ravi Kadarnauth bagged 4-34 and Mahendra Chaitram chipped in with 3-46.
Needing only 209 for victory off 300 balls, Windsor got off to the worst possible start, as they lost wickets in the ‘power-play’ overs. Two players in the team were forced to retire hurt to further dent the team’s hopes of a victory.
McGill were all over Windsor Forest, who eventually folded on 85-8 in 36.1 overs. Aditya Kadarnauth and Sachin Balgobin both made 14, Mahendra Balgobin made 13, and Ravi Kadarnauth made 10.
McGill’s victory was inspired by Travis Persaud with 2-12; Balram Aron with 2-15, Abdul Razack with 2-21, Ganesh Puran with 1-18, and Daniel Basdeo with 1-18.
