The Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport (MCY&S) on Monday revealed that the stunning success of the Western Tigers Football Club at the recently-concluded Super 16 Year-end Cup is intricately linked to its groundbreaking nationwide community ground development initiative.
The Ministry proclaimed in a statement on its Facebook page that the continued development of community infrastructure is a significant reason for the success of Western Tigers.
“In the wake of the victory, recognition has been directed toward the Ministry’s long-term approach to sports development, which prioritises grassroots clubs and youth engagement as key pillars of national sporting growth. The outcome has been cited as clear evidence that strategic investment in infrastructure and development programmes can yield measurable results on the field,” the statement highlighted.

Additionally, the Ministry noted that the emphasis on the grounds proved integral to the players’ development on the pitch.
“For Western Tigers, these upgrades proved critical in facilitating structured preparation and enhancing overall performance throughout the competition.
“Several youth players within the squad further underscored the value of these investments. With access to proper facilities, young athletes were able to train at higher standards, integrate seamlessly into senior competition, and perform with confidence,” the statement stated.
Furthermore, the Ministry emphasised that the Western Tigers’ triumph was a resounding endorsement of its unwavering commitment to elevate sport across Guyana.
“The Ministry has welcomed the success as validation of its vision to strengthen community sport across Guyana, reaffirming its commitment to expanding developmental initiatives and improving facilities nationwide.
“As celebrations continue, the Western Tigers’ victory stands not only as a sporting achievement but as a demonstration of how deliberate policy and community-focused investment can shape competitive excellence,” the statement noted.
In a nail-biting showdown, the Western Tigers triumphed over Slingerz FC with a thrilling 1-nil victory on New Year’s evening, claiming the coveted Super 16 title.
