…says no police contact after 48 hours
An 87-year-old woman is now living in fear after returning home to find her house ransacked, with the elderly resident reporting that more than two days after she made a report to the police, no officers had visited the scene. The woman, Bebi Rahim of Number 1 Settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice (WBB), Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), who lives alone, said she discovered the break-in on Saturday morning when she returned to her home. “When me come home morning time, me see all the place tumble up,” she said. According to the elderly woman, the house had been thoroughly searched, with items scattered across multiple rooms.

“All the cupboard disarrange… mattress and pillow everything tumble up,” she explained. She said doors were left open and the interior of the house was in complete disarray, leaving her shocked and confused as she tried to make sense of what had occurred. The woman explained that she has been living alone since the death of her son last year, and had already been fearful of staying at the house even before the incident. “Me frighten to sleep at house,” she said.
Still shaken by what she saw, the woman said she reached out to a neighbour before making her way to report the matter, despite inclement weather. “If you see how the rain fall… This same dress I wear in the rain me go for police [police outpost]. When me go there by myself, they send me to the station [Blairmont Police Station], and me go through the rain again to reach there,” she said.
She explained that she reported the matter on Saturday morning and provided her address and details to officers. “Yesterday morning [Saturday] me go to the police… until now they ain’t come,” she said on Sunday afternoon. The woman said she remained at home throughout Saturday waiting for Police response, but no officers visited. On Sunday, she said she was forced to leave the house briefly to purchase food, noting that she has not been feeling well since the incident. The elderly woman also indicated that she was unsure whether any money or valuables had been taken, explaining that she was overwhelmed by the condition of the house and struggled to immediately assess what was missing. Neighbours have expressed concerns about the responsiveness of law enforcement, particularly given that she first went to a nearby police outpost before being redirected to the Blairmont Police Station.
