Dear Editor,
The politician of the year award goes to the media. They have stepped in where politicians were either inept or lazy to perform the peoples work. Moreover, the media has served the politicians well in fostering an environment of reaction rather than proaction. For instance, investigative journalism has led to many surprising, or not so surprising headlines. It should be noted that the media, whether social or otherwise, has been bias depending on the sensitivity of its audience, regardless of the old adage good medicine is hard to swallow. Nevertheless, I have seen improvement in reporting current affairs unfiltered to the extent that the media is now being blamed for hyping up the current crime situation.
I believe this new direction would become infectious and the growth of citizen reporting will grow exponentially in all facets of social media, including cellphone recordings of misdeeds. Media can be the third political party against a set of collations that have come to serve their own self-interests, directly or indirectly.
Media should remain the beacons of truth that shine the light on everything dishonest. Moreover, it should continuously seek to educate the citizenry about their rights to freedom, liberty and justice.
Sincerely,
Keith Benard
