‘Medical’ marijuana lands man before the court

A man who was found to be in possession of marijuana, was on Wednesday taken before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Doodnauth Singh, 23, of Lot 1318 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was fined $20,000 for being in possession of cannabis.

He pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on September 27, 2016, at Georgetown, he had in his possession one gram of cannabis.

The prosecution contended that on the day in question, the defendant was entering the compound of his place of work when he was searched by the security guard there.

The cannabis was discovered in his bag pocket, as such, he was detained and the Police weresummoned. He was taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station where he was charged with the offence.

However, the man told the court that the cannabis is for medical purposes as he is asthmatic and also has a leg injury.
