Medical marijuana lands yet another man before the courts

A 22-year-old mechanic, who allegedly uses marijuana for medical purposes, was on Wednesday granted bail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Anthony Atenson of Saint Ignatius Village, Central Rupununi was charged with being in possession of 10 grams of cannabis.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
According to his attorney, his client suffers from severe malaria and was a patient in the interior for a long period.
According to him, the facility at which he was being treated ran out of medication and as such the cannabis was given to the defendant to be used.
He claimed that the defendant was not even aware of what he was being given.
The prosecution however, had no bail objections and this was granted at ,000. The Defendant will return to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on March 2, 2017.
