Men’s 100m at National Seniors set to be a scorcher

Guyanese Winston George is one of those contenders eyeing a podium position in the 100m event

National Senior Championships

The marquee event at this year’s National Senior Championships, on June 29 and 30 at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora, will undoubtedly be the men’s 100 metres.
With multiple reports confirming 400m National record holder Winston George’s participation in the men’s 100m, along with the return of Emmanuel Archibald from Jamaica, the synthetic surface at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora might need a fire tender on standby.
Add to this mix the local feud between Davin ’Black Boy’ Fraser of the Guyana Police Force and the GDF’s Akeem Stewart and you have one combustible 100m final on Saturday.
There is also the threat posed by the dark horse in the up-and-coming sprint sensation Loneil Marks, who is on a path to prove that he simply faltered at the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Games; while the potential greased lightning Rupert Perry is back, after taking some time off from the sport.
All competitors have their various attributes: George has his finishing speed, Archibald has his incomparable acceleration phase, Stewart has his powerful starts, Perry has his raw power, Fraser has his indomitable will, and Marks has his enthusiasm; and these will all make for an interesting 100m final, along with the fact that sheer ego would make nobody willing to lose in the final.
Regardless of the outcome on Saturday, one thing is certain: the men’s 100 metre final will be one of the best in a long time, and nobody is earmarked a clear winner. That alone will provide some thrilling action for the National Senior Championships.
Action in these championships will be run off from 9am on Saturday and Sunday; and with an entry fee of only $300, pity the individual who would deny him/herself this sumptuous treat in athletics.
