Mentally ill man remanded for chopping mother

Bisram Sookram of Sisters Village, East Bank Berbice was on Thursday remanded to prison until April 5, when he appeared before New Amsterdam Senior Magistrate Alex Moore charged with maliciously wounding his 54-year-old mother, Rajmattie Sookram, on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Sister Village, EBB. The woman had to be treated at the New Amsterdam hospital for chops to the head and arm.

Accused: Bisram Sookram

The 21-year-old defendant, reputed to be mentally ill, was not required to plead to the indictable charge; and the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Bernard Brown, objected to Bisram Sookram being placed on bail on ground that this defendant and the virtual complainant live in the same house, and if the defendant were allowed to return to the home, there is likely to be a recurrence of assault.
Statements will be filed when next the case comes up, on April 5.
Sookram reportedly chopped his mother to her head and arm before plunging into the nearby Berbice River to escape Police arrest. He was, nevertheless, arrested in the Berbice River. The incident took place two buildings away from the Sisters Police Station.

Injured mother: Rajmattie Sookram

Rajmattie Sookram told this publication that her son, who previously had been a patient at the National Psychiatric Hospital, had attacked family members on prior occasions.
Sisters Magistrate’s Court records indicate that the defendant had previously been charged with assaulting his father, but in court on Thursday, no mention was made of the man’s past or medical history.
