Miner allegedly drowns in old mining pit

The body of 31-year-old Albert Nurse of Lot 683 South Amelia’s Ward Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) was found at Banana Landing Backdam, Middle Mazaruni River in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) on Tuesday last.
It is believed that the man might have fallen into an old mining pit and drowned. Based on reports received, the now dead man had displayed a strange behaviour prior to his demise.
One of his colleagues reportedly told detectives that one day prior to the man’s discovery, he saw him lying in a hammock in the mining camp.
He further stated that he attempted to speak with the man but he ran out of the mining camp and was not seen again, until his body was found in an old mining pit about 200 feet away.
The body bore no marks of violence but the Police are continuing their investigations.
In the latter part of September 2020, a 39-year-old miner was killed after the boat in which he was travelling collided with a log at Bush Cow Landing, Imbaimadai, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
It was reported that the deceased and four others were in a wooden boat captained by a twenty-four-year-old miner of Kabauri village when the accident occurred. They were said to be heading to Beanamarupai Backdam from Imbaimadai Landing.
However, while in the vicinity of Bush Cow Landing, the boat allegedly collided with a floating log. As a result of the impact, he was thrown out of the boat and landed in the river.
A search party was launched to locate the victim. The search continued the following day and it was then the body was discovered a short distance from the mishap.
