Miner gets 2 years on an assault charge; another remanded to prison

Two miners from different regions of the country were on Thursday brought before the Bartica Magistrates’ Courts to answer to separate assault-related charges.
In the first instance, 18-year-old Colwayne Allen, a miner of 4th Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), was arrested by Police from the Bartica Police Station and charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.

Allen appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohammed, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison pending trial. The matter was adjourned to November 15 for continuation.

Meanwhile, Wynel Parris, a 33-year-old gold miner of Victory Valley, Wismar, Linden, was slapped with a felonious wounding charge.
Parris also appeared before Magistrate Mohammed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Friday and pleaded guilty. As such, he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
