Miner on bail for larceny, man remanded for cannabis

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Wednesday granted bail to Leroy Pedro, 34, a gold miner of South Cummingsburg, Georgetown, when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to face a charge of larceny.
It is alleged that Pedro on October 13, 2017 at Mousie Backdam in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), demanded from Royston Gilbert, called “Troy”, six ounces of raw gold valued at $1.3 million, with intent to steal, property of Steven Chung.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore alleged that the parties are known to each other and the incident in fact stemmed from a “deal” gone sour.
Gilbert is employed by Chung as the General Manager (GM) of the mining company. On the day of the incident, the defendant went into the complainant’s camp and demanded from Gilbert, six ounces of gold. Naturally, the complainant refused and the accused produced a rope and threatened to tie Gilbert and drag him through the trail causing the complainant to become fearful.
Faced with pressure under fear, the complainant handed over the day’s earnings which fell short by one ounce of the demanded quantity.
Bail was granted to the accused at $100,000 and he was ordered to return to court on November 8.
