Miner remanded for illegal firearm possession

A gold miner from Port Kaituma, in Region One (Barima-Waini) was on Monday remanded to prison for unlawful possession of a firearm by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, after he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It is alleged that on February 13, 2017 at 4 Mile Arakaka, Region One, Mark Anthony Chand, 24, was in possession of a 9.2 mm pistol without being a holder of a firearm licence.

Bail was denied and the matter was transferred to the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court for May 9. Chand will remain on remand at the Camp Street penitentiary until the court date.
