Miner suffers 2nd-degree burns during freak accident

Rodwell Allen, also called “Ba-Bai”, a 57-year-old gold miner of Lot 112 Mocha-Arcadia, East Bank Demerara, is currently nursing second degree burns to 55 per cent of his body, sustained during an incident with an engine on Thursday.
The incident occurred at about 15:30h at Partang Backdam, Upper Mazaruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni). According to Police, ranks visited the Imbaimadai Health Centre, where enquiries disclosed that the man, a “Marrack man” on a six-inch land dredge, had gone with four other persons to the river’s bank to cut off the water engine. While holding the throttle on the engine, the radiator hose slipped out and set him on fire. He plunged into river, and was retrieved and rushed to the Imbaimadai Health Centre.
Less than a week ago, a 65-year-old Brazilian miner died after his right leg was severed while he was working in a mining pit in Region Seven.
The dead Brazilian has been named as Taburcio Valeriano De Andrade, also called “Netto”, of Boa Vista, Brazil and of Oku Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven.
Reports are that De Andrade was at his mining pit in the Oku Backdam area when he allegedly attempted to jump over one of his jet’s four-cylinder engines which was in operation at the time. His right leg came into contact with the engine’s fan and was severed from his body.
According to reports, the man was unable to seek medical attention in time to save his life.
