Minibus driver further remanded for killing pedal cyclist

Twenty-five-year-old Jamal John of Lot 53 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, was on Thursday further remanded to prison by Senior Magistrate Judy Latchman on a causing death by dangerous driving charge.

John, a minibus driver, had denied the charge that was previously read to him.
In a bail application, John’s lawyer requested that his client be released on reasonable bail since he was locked up for a long period of time and there are no witnesses in the matter.
Bail was however refused since he was previously charged and fined for dangerous driving after being found guilty of the offence.
The matter was adjourned until June 15.
It was alleged that on December 18, 2017, at Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, he drove minibus, BTT 8476, in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of Desmond Grandsoult.
Facts presented to the court stated that on the day in question, the minibus was proceeding South along Vlissengen Road at a fast rate while the now dead man was proceeding in the same direction, in front of the minibus. Grandsoult then attempted to cross the road when the accident took place. It was reported that the left front side of the minibus collided with the rear of the pedal cycle which resulted in Grandsoult falling onto the roadway and being run over by the bus. The driver then swerved into the trench.
The injured man was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted to the High Dependency Unit. The 42-year-old man subsequently died while receiving treatment.
It was reported that on the day in question, John fled the scene which resulted in the Police issuing a wanted bulletin for his arrest.
