Minibus passenger nabbed with over 2kg ganja

A 23-year-old labourer was nabbed by Police with over two kilograms of marijuana he had in a haversack, when Police officers at the Demerara Harbour Bridge intercepted a minibus, in which he was a passenger.

The passenger, who hails from Parker Street, Providence, East Bank Demerara, was travelling in the bus at about 11:20h on Friday when the discovery was made.
Enquiries disclosed that the suspect was seated in minibus BZZ 1552, which was proceeding from the eastern to the western side of the DHB. A Police rank performing duties on the western end of the bridge intercepted the minibus and carried out a search.
The 23-year-old was searched as well as the haversack he had in his possession. Inside the haversack were five black plastic bags, each containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The suspect was arrested and escorted to the La Grange Police Station, where the cannabis was weighed in his presence and amounted to 2229.7 grams.
He was told of the offence committed, placed into custody and is slated to be charged for possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. (G12)
