Minibus slams into ECD man on pedestrian crossing

Dexter Thomas of Lot 14 Haslington, East Coast Demerara was killed on a pedestrian crossing at Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara on Saturday at about 17:30h when a minibus struck him as he was crossing the public road.
Surveillance footage from a nearby house showed the 48-year-old pedestrian standing on the Mc Doom public road while three lanes of traffic were proceeding south. He then proceeded to cross the road from east to west, and stopped at a concrete median. At this juncture, minibus BWW 6110, being driven by Troy Arthur of Linden, was approaching from a southerly direction. Thomas then attempted to run across the road, and was hit by the left front side of the minibus.
The right side front of the minibus then collided with minibus BNN 3796, which was proceeding north on the western side of the road, as the driver, Arthur, attempted to swerve to avoid hitting Thomas.
Unconscious and bleeding profusely, Thomas was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He died shortly after, while receiving medical attention.
His body has been transferred to the GPHC mortuary to await a post mortem examination.
Minibus driver Troy Arthur has been taken into Police custody.
