Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Minister Sydney Allicock and Permanent Secretary Sherie Samantha Fedee joined staff at the Ministry on Tuesday to offer a moment of silence following the passing of 47-year-old Gavin North.
North, a driver attached to the Ministry’s Administrative Department, collapsed and died moments after arriving at his apartment which was completely destroyed by fire on Monday last.
Minister Allicock described North as a “very good friend and colleague”, adding that his passing brought 2019 to a sad ending for both his family and the Ministry.
In offering words of encouragement, Allicock urged staff to “reflect on our own situation and offer words of encouragement to each other and to strengthen our relations with our colleagues as a team”.
It was reported that the now dead man arrived at the fire scene and began salvaging household items from the apartment he occupied before he suddenly fainted.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital in an unconscious state, and died while receiving medical attention.
Reports are that the fire originated in the upper flat of the building, gutting everything in its path.
The Minister expressed condolences to North’s family, on behalf of the Ministry.
