…Title sponsors to host career talks with participating Institutions
Things got a little bit more serious in the ongoing MODEC Tertiary Education Football tournament as the quarterfinalists were on the receiving end of full playing kits on Saturday.
The simple presentation was hosted at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground, Carifesta Avenue, where teams and players from across the country were on hand to receive their uniforms.

There, MODEC Country Manager Rafael Fumis, who was on hand to present the spanking new uniforms, remarked, “Today, we celebrate all the teams participating in this tournament; your dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship have made this event a true success. Whether you advance or not, your efforts and commitment are what make this competition meaningful. At MODEC, we believe sports and education are both essential for the growth and development of young people. By supporting this tournament, we hope to inspire you to excel in every area of your lives.”
Fumis went on to announce an upcoming venture, disclosing, “We also want to help you prepare for the future, and that’s why MODEC will soon host a career and technical talk for the participating teams. This session will give you a chance to learn about career opportunities in the energy sector, ask questions and get practical advice on building your future, whether in sports, engineering or any field you choose.”
Meanwhile, Petra co-director Troy Mendonca reflected on the tournament thus far, describing it as unique.
“Our experience for the past two weeks was very unique. I know for a lot of teams, one of our concerns was how they were going to put together the team because it’s an inaugural tournament, but they all put together their teams and gave a good account of themselves,” Mendonca shared.
The Petra co-director added, “We want to thank each and every team for the efforts that they made. Like I said from the initial stage, we might have hiccups because it’s the first time we’re doing it, but so far, if we had any issue, with the support of you guys and the coordinators, everything was sorted out.
The tournament’s quarterfinalists include the University of Guyana (UG) Turkeyen Campus, Government Technical Institute (GTI), New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI), Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre (UCITC), Port Mourant Technical Institute (PMTI), Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI), Linden Technical Institute (LTI) and Mahaicony Technical Institute (MTI).
The quarterfinal action is billed to kick off on Saturday, February 28, at the Scotts Ground in New Amsterdam, Berbice, where NATI will take on GTI in the first fixture of a doubleheader at 16:00h. Then, at 18:00h, UCITC battles PMTI.
On March 1, the action moves to the Queen’s College Ground in Georgetown, where UG will take on ETI at 13:00h, while LTI battles MTI at 15:30h.
The teams in the MODEC Tertiary Education tournament are competing for a $300,000 grand prize that will go towards a school project of their choice.
