MoE launches full probe after SJH student dies by suicide

The Education Ministry has launched an investigation after a student of the St Joseph High School tragically died by suicide.
Information coming from the Ministry comes days after the incident was highlighted on social media. The Ministry on Monday informed that it is aware of the situation and is taking action.
“The Ministry wishes to inform the public that preliminary information has been received and that a full investigation has been launched into the matter…Due to the nature of the matter and out of respect for the family and the memory of the child, the Ministry is not going to release the findings of the preliminary investigation. We ask that all stakeholders be respectful and ensure we operate in a manner that places paramount importance on the welfare and well-being of all our children,” the Ministry shared.
According to the statement, psychological support is being offered to staffers and the student body.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the child’s family and friends during this difficult time. The Ministry has committed its support to the family and is pursuing that commitment.”
Guyana Times understands that this incident stemmed from several matters which were handled at the school. The child, who is 14 years of age, was allegedly facing accusations from a teacher. Leading up to this unfortunate event, he was also beaten up by another student.
Concerned parents took to social media, highlighting that their children were traumatised by the series of events. On the other hand, past students were calling for intervention, having experienced similar situations in the past that were not conducive to a healthy school environment, primarily as it relates to treatment from the staff body.
