School is out and there is not a better time to get the children involved in extracurricular activities. For approximately 200 children, age 6-11 years old this will be the case for eight days within their Easter School break, at Colgrain and the National Aquatic Centre swimming pools.
Yesterday at the Colgrain Pool the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission launched its fifth annual Easter Swimming Programme.
The programme was originally planned to cater for 180 children but due to the large turn out yesterday, provision was made for the expansion to accommodate 200. It will be held simultaneously at Colgrain for children 6-8 and at the Aquatic Centre for children 9-11, between the hours of 9:00 to 11:00.
Except for the two holidays, Good Friday and Easter Monday and the weekends, during the eight day period participants of the programme will learn to swim or enhance their swimming ability under the watchful eyes of several experience swimming coaches. The programme is in its fifth year and has produced swimmers who went on to represent Guyana.
Director of Sport, Christopher Jones said the programme is an introductory course to teach the children the basic of swimming while urging the parents to keep them involve after the conclusion of the eight days.
There will be another camp during the next school break in July and August.
