Molotov cocktails, other flammable items seized by Police during Sophia protest

The items that were found in Sophia, Greater Georgetown

Members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) have confiscated some 16 ‘flambeau’ glass bottles (Molotov cocktails), two gallons of flammable substance, and several old tyres that had been used to block Dennis Street in Sophia, Greater Georgetown, in an apparent protest against the Government’s proposed salary increase for teachers.
Reports received are that police were summoned to the area where they found the items, and preliminary investigations have revealed that three men on motorcycles had placed the items in the middle of the road. One of those men was reportedly chased down and apprehended by the police.
It is alleged that teachers in the area had paid the men to commit the act.
Investigations are continuing.
