Mon Repos Market hosting cricket fiesta

Softball cricket is considered the peoples’ game and is played on any opening possible with any amount of players available, as such the Mon Repos Market Vendors Development Committee (MRMVDC) have embarked on a major fund raising venture for Saturday February 18, 2017. The vendors will take to the Lusignan Community Centre ground for a bar-b-que and family fun day which includes softball cricket competitions across four categories; female open, male open, male over-40 years old and male over-50 years old.

All proceeds from the day’s event will go towards the maintenance of the biggest market on the East Coast Demerara and will start with the Over-50 match between

the best of Georgetown taking on the best of the East Coast of Demerara in a 20 overs a-side match from 14:00h. All players from each team will be given medals for participation in the one of a kind cricket match while there will be trophies for outstanding performances.

According to chairman of the MRMVDC, Kishan Sarwan the truly family fun day have musical entertainment all day, trampoline and novelty games for the children and a variety bar to go along with the cricket action which will go into the night under the floodlights.

The female tournament will not attract any entrance fee for the four teams who will 10 overs a-side matches for trophies using the supreme balls. However, the Male Open and Male Over 40 competitions will be 10 overs a-side among eight teams in each category using the white balls. The entrance fee is set at $15,000 per team and the organizers will take the first eight teams in each category. The finalists are guaranteed cash and trophies to remember the occasion.

At a simple launch ceremony in the market on Thursday, Sarwan unveiled the array of trophies that are up for grabs and told Guyana Times Sport that the committee is aggressively approaching sponsors with the aim of getting more persons involved to make the day a resounding success. Sarwan further stated that “Saturday is market day but that Saturday will be a Saturday with a difference and the entire market will benefit once everybody (vendors) come out.”
