…robbed of $3M A Corriverton, Berbice money changer was on Monday ambushed and robbed of close to $3 million in both local and foreign currency including Canadian, Surinamese and United States dollars.
Daneshwar Pananlall, also called “Peter”, of lot 114 Eliza Mary, Springlands, Corriverton was robbed in the vicinity of the area where the money changers operate in Corriverton.
According to the 40-year-old man, at about 07:30h on Monday, as he slowed his motorcycle to navigate a corner at the head of his street, there were three men sitting on the culvert. He said that two of the men had cutlasses and they pounced on him and took away the bag he was carrying before pushing his motorbike over causing him to fall to the ground.
Pananlall related that he sprang up quickly and chased after the bandits but they disappeared into the distance.
During that time, Pananlall explained that he was running behind the bandits and at the same time was shouting for help.
A phone call to the Police was promptly answered but the officers arrived about 45 minutes later.
“They start questing me as if I am the bandit…By the time they finish with me, they can’t find them (the bandits) anymore,” the man related. He said that the Police wanted him to justify his reasons for having the cash.
“If you are working with a company and you are going to work, you will need your pen and whatever you have to go to work with, so, you wouldn’t leave home with those things? My business is changing money. So, I don’t have to go with my money to my workplace?”
Pananlall has been changing money in Corriverton for the past three years. The Police have since launched an investigation.
