Mother & daughters start homemade green seasoning business
Preparing a flavourful Guyanese cuisine always requires adding the best tasting green seasoning. A well-made Guyanese style seasoning commonly consists of a mixture of rich natural herbs such as thyme, eschalot and celery with the addition of peppers, onions and garlic for added flavour.
This condiment is widely used and can be found on the shelves of your local supermarkets in many different brands. Such great demand for seasoning has encouraged a mother and her two daughters to create their own unique family brand that goes by the name Triple S Miracle Seasoning.
The Triple S stands for Sharon Yaw, the mother, and her two daughters, Shenice and Shamayah.
Sharon, who heads the small business venture, started off making her own seasoning for family dishes and always received positive reviews. She explained that both family members and friends alike motivated her to start up a business and market her seasoning to the public.
This led to the birth of Triple S Miracle Seasoning in March 2020.
Her two daughters lend a helping hand in managing and expanding the business. In fact, they explained that they want to create a family legacy that will last for generations and that selling their own homemade seasoning is only the tip of the iceberg. They also would like, in the process, to employ youths like themselves.
Customers are usually reached via social media namely Facebook and WhatsApp. Sharon stated that their customers love the seasoning and they go as far as to recommend it to other friends and family.
“My customers are always excited to support my business and they provide recommendations on what other new products I can explore to meet their needs. They also purchase large quantities to take for their relatives in the United States.”
“Packaging is done to suit the customers’ demands and can be bottled in varying sizes from small to large,” Shenice explained, adding that she is the designer of the business’ attractive logo. But what makes Triple S Miracle Seasoning definitely worth the try is the fact that it is made entirely from all-natural, organic ingredients as compared to other competitors.
According to Shenice, “All of our ingredients are natural and organic, and why our seasoning is different is because we put both turmeric and ginger inside. Most people do not do that. It has no additives or preservatives. Our business is about promoting a healthy lifestyle and helping people to eat clean.”
Meanwhile, Sharon told Guyana Times that she has had a hard time choosing and using other seasoning products as they may have artificial colouring and flavours as well as being slurry and clumpy. She also aims to provide a product that has a long shelf life with great taste.
In addition, she noted that they are currently working to have their seasoning product in supermarkets as they are currently making efforts to have the business formalised.
“We did reach out to some supermarkets. We are working around the clock to have everything done. We have already had quality control testing, and so on. We are in for the long run and for the benefit of our family and Guyana,” the mother of two shared.
As with any small business, there have been emerging challenges. For instance, changing weather conditions have posed a threat. Sharon indicated that “during the rainy season we were not getting eschalot and celery. And when we were able to source them, the prices were very expensive. We have somebody that supplies us with the ingredients. But we have since started a garden where we plant some eschalot and broadleaf thyme.”
Nonetheless, her business continues to thrive and she strongly advises and encourages young people who are looking to start or run a similar business to not give up and to trust the whole business process. Once you do this, Sharon posited that “you will certainly make it.”
