The Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the hospitalisation of a Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) mother and her two children, who have been admitted to the Linden Hospital Complex after consuming a poisonous substance.
Reports are that the 24-year-old mother had allegedly fed her eight-year-old daughter and six-month-old son with the substance before consuming it herself. Reports are that the incident occurred at about 10:00h at Wisroc, Linden, and they were later rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC).
While information remains sketchy, Regional Commander Superintendent Hugh Winter has confirmed the incident and noted that ranks had visited the hospital. Investigations are ongoing.
In April 2018, 25-year-old Hofoswana Awena Rutherford, who was found guilty of killing her two children by poisoning them with carbon tablets, was sentenced by Justice Navindra Singh to 98 years’ imprisonment on two counts of manslaughter.
On the first count, killing of four-year-old Hodascia Cadogan, Rutherford was sentenced to 45 years’ jail; while on the second count, killing of one-year-old Jabari Cadogan, she was ordered to serve 53 years’ jail time.
Rutherford had collapsed on the floor when the 12-member jury unanimously found her guilty on both counts on March 15, 2018. The jury believed the State’s evidence that the mother had given each of her children half of a tablet of aluminium phosphide (rat poison) on March 27, 2014 at Supply Branch Road, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
