West Indies Test opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie have secured Cricket West Indies (CWI) retainer contracts, the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) announced on Thursday.

Chanderpaul, 27, has featured in eight Tests so far with an average of 40.69 and a best of 207 not out while Motie, 28, has picked up 22 wickets in four Tests as well as 14 wickets in seven One-Day Internationals. Both players are currently in the Guyana Harpy Eagles (GHE) squad playing in the Regional Super50.

The GCB indicated that by virtue of Chanderpaul and Motie’s ascension, two spots have opened within the Harpy Eagles franchise for contracts which were awarded to Quinten Sampson and Isai Thorne.
Quentin Sampson
Sampson, who hails from Essequibo, is a hard-hitting all-rounder while Thorne is a West Indies youth pacer, considered to be among the fastest in the Region at his level. Sampson is in the Harpy Eagles squad for the Regional Super50 while Thorne is representing Combined Campuses and Colleges.
Isai Thorne
“The players were given the nod following their progression and development in recent times. Thorne, the Windies youth pacer, has been making waves with his liveliness and his budding potential,” the GCB stated in a release while noting “Sampson, the hard-hitting Essequibian all-rounder, is among the most devastating batters on the local scene, known for his power-hitting prowess as well as his ability to produce wickets with the ball.”
“Thorne and Sampson are deserving players being handed a big opportunity to further their careers,” the release continued.
The other players contracted by the franchise for the 2023-2024 season are: Matthew Nandu, Tevin Imlach, Kemol Savory, Kevlon Anderson, Rampertab Ramnauth, Mavindra Dindyal, Kevin Sinclair, Nial Smith, Shamar Joseph, Ronsford Beaton, Veerasammy Permaul, Antony Adams, and Junior Sinclair.
