Motorcyclist dies after crashing into utility pole
An East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, resident was killed in the wee hours of Friday after he lost control of his motorcycle and slammed into a nearby lamp pole along the East Coast Highway.
Dead is 26-year-old Zahid Mohamed, a construction worker of Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown. According to reports, the accident occurred at about 01:50h as Mohamed was heading home after hanging out at the ‘Plaisance Line top’ on the railway embankment.
Based on reports received, Mohamed was riding West along the southern carriage way of the East Coast Public Road, allegedly at a fast rate, when he lost control of motorcycle CH 6696 in the vicinity of Atlantic Ville, and crashed into a utility pole that was in the median at the centre of the road.
As a result of the impact, the young man sustained injuries and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Guyana Times spoke with the now dead man’s brother, Mark Jeffery, who explained that the family was informed of the accident by Mohamed’s friends.
“We get a call this morning after two o’clock from his friends that an accident occurred on the East Coast by Ogle bridge… that a motorbike crash and it was him. When we do go there, he was lying motionless and the Police take him to the hospital,” the man recalled.
Jeffery said that upon arriving at the hospital, they were informed that his brother had died. He said he then went to identify his brother’s body.
The body of the 26-year-old construction worker is currently at the GPHC Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination which is expected to be conducted on Monday.
Meanwhile, the motorcycle is currently lodged at the Police station as investigations continue.
