Motorcyclist dies, pillion rider critical after slamming into turning car
A motorcyclist lost his life on Saturday evening while his pillion rider is now battling for his life following an accident along the Haslington Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Dead is 32-year-old Rene Anthony Sheo of Nabaclis, ECD, while the injured man was identified as 30-year-old Alex Mayers. At the time of the accident, the two men were travelling on a motorcycle, CM 1832.
Police stated that at about 23:00h on the day in question, a motor car driven by a 62-year-old male from Cove & John, ECD, was proceeding along Haslington Public Road and reportedly made a sudden turn.
At that point, the driver told investigators that he felt an impact and immediately brought his vehicle to a halt. As he exited, he saw the two men lying on the roadway with injuries about their bodies.
They were subsequently picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where Sheo was pronounced dead on arrival.
His friend, on the other hand, was admitted as a patient. His condition is regarded as serious.
Police reports stated that neither the now dead motorcyclist nor the pillion rider were wearing safety helmets at the time of the accident.
Meanwhile, a breathalyser test was administered to the driver of the motor car but there were no traces of alcohol in his system. He remains in custody pending further investigations.
